# How we reverse-engineered Google Maps pagination

In this story, you'll see the process of decoding URL parameters for pagination on Google Maps. It involved deobfuscation of Closure-compiled JavaScript, reverse-engineering of [Protobuf](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol%5FBuffers) data structures, and a bit of math. We tried to decode URL parameters by ourselves, by using [pbtk](https://github.com/marin-m/pbtk), and attempted to outsource this work. In the end, we succeeded after several pair programming sessions.

## How Google Maps pagination works

We can get the link for the next page only by clicking on the “next page” button.

They lead to a `f.txt` file that contains the next page results.

## The Plan

1. Find out how the `pb (protobuf)` string is constructed.
2. Generate the next page link by setting the required parameters.
3. Catch and parse the data.

### Decoding the URL parameters for Google Maps pagination

Google Maps URLs contain the `pb` parameter contains string-encoded [Protobuf](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protocol%5FBuffers). The format is the same as for the `data` parameter in the browser URL on Google Maps. It contains `!`\-separated values. There are [several](https://stackoverflow.com/q/47017387/1291371) [answers](https://stackoverflow.com/a/34275131/1291371) on StackOverflow, [gists](https://gist.github.com/jeteon/e71fa21c1feb48fe4b5eeec045229a0c) on [GitHub](https://gist.github.com/mingalevme/04702bb7e5e361448cbe44cb7b3895d5), [some](http://blog.themillhousegroup.com/2016/08/deep-diving-into-google-pb-embedded-map.html) [blog](https://andrewwhitby.com/2014/09/09/google-maps-new-embed-format/) [posts](https://medium.com/@supun1001/how-to-generate-google-embed-links-programmatically-for-iframes-for-routes-only-d6dc225e59e8) [about](https://medium.com/@marin%5Fm/how-i-found-a-5-000-google-maps-xss-by-fiddling-with-protobuf-963ee0d9caff) decoding, and even a kinda official [guide on reverse engineering protobuf](https://github.com/protobufjs/protobuf.js/wiki/How-to-reverse-engineer-a-buffer-by-hand), but none of this touches pagination.

We tried to use [pbtk](https://github.com/marin-m/pbtk) but it wasn't able to extract structures and crashed. Several attempts of reading pretty-printed obfuscated JavaScript didn't work.

After pairing with [Milos](https://aciddjus.medium.com), we found out most of the variables in Google Maps pagination URI: `latitude`, `longitude`, `altitude_in_feets`, `pagination_offset`, `some parameter that is equal to psi but I don't know what it's meaning`. `psi` changes after each page reload and it's in `window.APP_OPTIONS[11]`.

Another moving part is a list of filters, but we don't know how to parse them.

We understood that we can make the first request for Google Maps, extract variables and construct pagination URI. Like for our [API to scrape YouTube](https://serpapi.com/youtube-search-api).

We didn't want to add new parameters (`long`, `lat`, `alt`) to our API for pagination specifically, so we tried to found ways to [convert](https://groups.google.com/g/google-maps-js-api-v3/c/hDRO4oHVSeM) `alt` [from](https://gis.stackexchange.com/a/13010/176905) [zoom](https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/bingmaps/articles/bing-maps-tile-system#ground-resolution-and-map-scale). But [those](https://gis.stackexchange.com/a/178905/176905) formulas don't equal the altitude in pagination URLs that Google Maps use.

Also, altitude depends on the number of pixels per inch which is different on different devices, and Google re-scales map to fit all places on the map. (This was irrelevant actually). [Milos](https://aciddjus.medium.com) combined multiple formulas from the JS code in Google Maps to the formula to convert altitude to zoom for the given latitude.

### Code to generate `pb` parameter

The `pb` parameter for the Google Maps pagination is a function of `ll` from the URL and the`offset`.

`ll` can contain negative and positive `latitude`, `longitude`, and `zoom`. We decided to extract those parameters with regular expression.
